 Greenwich Village’s Bohemian Coffeehouse

The Peacock Caffe was a celebrated coffeehouse in New York City’s Greenwich Village that operated for over five decades, from the mid-1940s until the late 1990s. Located originally at 149 West 4th Street and later on Greenwich Avenue, this unassuming café became a local institution and a haven for artists, writers, and night owls.

It was known for its European-style espresso, cozy atmosphere, and welcoming policy that encouraged patrons to linger – qualities that made it a cherished fixture of the Village’s social and artistic life.

By the time it closed (circa 1999–2000), the Peacock Caffe was widely regarded as a Greenwich Village landmark, its loss mourned as the end of an era.
